Desde que emprendí la aventura de escribir en mi propia lengua, siempre lo he hecho tomando como tema lo que tenemos y lo que le sucede a nuestros pueblos, dentro de su indigeneidad, pensando que eso es lo que le puede dar su particularidad a un escritor indígena. Sólo que ahora me encuentro en un camino nuevo, y me asombro porque es un camino que no había pensado que algún día recorrería, ya que a continuación escribiré “sobre cualquier tema, siempre y cuando sea relacionado de alguna manera con Chivas”, tal como dijo la persona que tuvo esta feliz idea. Cuando dice Chivas, no está hablando de un proyecto agropecuario, sino del equipo de futbol que conocemos como el Guadalajara, cuando no decimos Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara.

 

Mi asombro viene ante la posibilidad de escribir en un idioma indígena, que es el zapoteco, y que se habla en una de las regiones del Estado de Oaxaca, en donde la mayoría de los indígenas viven en zonas montañosas. Tal vez esta sea la razón por la que el futbol no se ha popularizado tanto como deporte, ya que no existen espacios con las dimensiones que requiere una cancha de futbol. Por tal motivo, el deporte favorito de estos pueblos es el básquetbol. Esta situación explica por qué los pueblos indígenas que viven en llanuras han sido los primeros en acondicionar una cancha de futbol y quienes comenzaron a jugarlo. Por el contrario, los otros pueblos que no tienen esta posibilidad, no se habían atrevido a destinar una cantidad de terreno tan grande para jugar este deporte, considerando que en él cabrían fácilmente dos almudes de semilla de maíz, los cuales en una buena cosecha significan dos toneladas de buen maíz. Probablemente ese era el pensamiento de los más viejos.

 

La situación de hoy en día es muy diferente porque la mayoría de los pueblos ya consumen maíz de exportación, es decir, que su esperanza ya no es sembrar para conseguir maíz. Asimismo, tanto la televisión como la educación pública han motivado en los pueblos indígenas el gusto por el futbol. Por tal motivo, varios pueblos, aunque tengan que ir a poner su cancha lejos y a las afueras del mismo, ya están jugando futbol. Otros, incluso utilizando grandes máquinas, están desgajando cerros para poner su cancha y que así los jóvenes empiecen a gustar del balompié; sin que esto quiera decir que los otros deportes desaparecerán. Sólo se diversificará la afición por el deporte.

 

Todo esto que he dicho lo considero necesario para que se entienda por qué el autor de esta idea habla de sectores “subrepresentados”. De esta manera se podrá comprender, por un lado, que así como en el futbol, los pueblos indígenas han estado en este país al margen de casi todo; y por otro, que mis opiniones sobre el futbol son ajenas a cómo piensa mi pueblo. Estas son fruto de mi estancia fuera de él, de la emigración a la ciudad. Pero a fin de cuentas, como dice la invitación a la que he respondido, que esto sea una prueba.

These are Indigenous Words

 

Since I began the adventure of writing in the actual language, I have always done it through the theme of what we have and what happens to our communities, within its indigenousness, thinking that this is what can provide a peculiarity to an indigenous writer. Except that now I find myself on a new path and I am surprised because it's a road that I had not thought I'd ever be following, since in this collaboration I will write about (as the person who had this happy idea explained) "any theme, as long as it is related in some way to Chivas". When he says Chivas, he is not talking about an agricultural theme, but rather the futbol team that we know as Guadalajara, whenever we don't refer to them as the striped goats.

 

My amazement comes from the possibility of writing about this theme in the indigenous language of Zapotec, which is spoken in one of the regions of the state of Oaxaca where most of its indigenous population live in mountainous zones. Perhaps for this reason, futbol has not become a popular sport due to the lack of spaces that the dimensions of its field requires, and why the favored sport in those towns is basketball. This situation is what explains why indigenous populations that live in the savannas have been the first in creating futbol fields and where futbol was first played. The other communities did not have this possibility. They had not dared to allocate a parcel large enough to play this sport, keeping in mind that in it would easily fit about two almudes of corn, that during a good harvest yields about two tons of good corn. Maybe this was the thinking of the older ones.

Nowadays, the situation with respect to this is very different. Most villages work with "export" corn. In other words, their hope is not to sow to have corn to eat. Television and public education, in combination, have developed in indigenous communities a taste for futbol. In this environment, several communities, despite having to create their pitches far and outside of their town, are now playing futbol. Others, additionally, using great machines, are knocking down hills to create their playing fields. And in that way, the youth are beginning to embrace futbol, without the other sports disappearing. It's a diversification of the support of sports.

All of this that I have said, I consider necessary so that it may be understood why the author of this idea refers to the "underrepresented" and in that way, understand that like with futbol, the indigenous communities have been at the outskirts of almost everything. That's one angle. The other is to understand that my opinions about futbol are far from those of my community. They are the result of my distance from them, my transition into the cities. But as the invitation to write about this stated, let's try this out and see what happens.
