La vez pasada venía platicando del tiempo en que salí de mi pueblo en busca de, según yo, una mejor vida. Decía que en el tren conocí a un muchacho muy aficionado al futbol y que su equipo favorito, “al que le iba”, decía él, eran Las Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara. Era tan platicador este muchacho que me enteré que ya tenía varios años viviendo en la ciudad de México y que salió de su pueblo pensando como yo. Además, era de la misma región de donde yo venía, lo cual mostró al comenzar a mezclar palabras zapotecas con el español con que empezamos a hablarnos. Esto nos generó una mayor confianza, tanto que al bajar del tren me invitó a compartir el cuarto en donde él vivía, el cual estaba en una azotea de la colonia Condesa.

 

La admiración de este muchacho al futbol y a su equipo favorito lo habían motivado a tener presentes bastantes datos sobre ellos, por lo que a mí me parecía un experto en el tema. Tanta era su pasión, que a mí me cambiaba de apellido, a veces era yo Javier Cárdenas, en otras era Javier Ledesma, pero el apellido que más me atribuía era el de De La Torre.

 

Primero pensaba que estos apellidos eran de algún gobernante, de algún político o de algún artista, ya que mis paisanos tienen la costumbre de agregarle a nuestro nombre el apellido de algún personaje muy conocido. Por ejemplo, hoy en día, si te llamas Enrique, te gritan “Enrique Peña Nieto”.

 

Pensando en eso, me puse a buscar quién sería esa persona, a qué se dedicaría, porque no era ni político ni artista. Vine a encontrar este nombre en un periódico de deportes, y así supe quién era el Ingeniero Don Javier de la Torre. En ese tiempo ya era un personaje casi histórico para el Guadalajara y para toda la afición mexicana; y bueno, pensando en eso, espero que estas líneas sean un reconocimiento a uno de los pilares de la grandeza y altura que este equipo ha obtenido en el futbol mexicano. Don Javier de la Torre fue parte de aquellos que hicieron que al Guadalajara se le llamara el “Campeonísimo”, debido a que durante 7 años seguidos fueron los máximos del futbol mexicano.

In my previous article, I wrote about the time that I left my town in search of, according to me, a better life. I said that on the train I met a guy that was a big futbol fanatic and that his favorite team, which he “rooted for”, was the Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara. The guy was so talkative that I learned that he’d already been living in Mexico City for several years. And that he’d also left his hometown, much like me. Plus, he was from the same region that I was from, which he demonstrated by mixing Zapotec words with Spanish ones while we spoke. This made us so comfortable with each other that by the time we were exiting the train, he’d invited me to share the room in which he lived, which was on a rooftop in Colonia Condesa.

 

This young man’s admiration for futbol and his favorite team had motivated him to learn many details about them. So many details that to me he seemed like an expert. His passion was so great that while conversing, he’d change my last name. Sometimes I would be Javier Cárdenas. Other times Javier Ledesma. But the last name that he assigned to me most regularly was De La Torre.

 

At first I thought that these were the last names of governors or some politician or artist. My community has the tendency to add to our names the last names of well-known figures. For example, nowadays if your name was Enrique, we’d call you “Enrique Peña Nieto”.

 

With that in mind, I began to try to figure out who this person was, what he did for a living, because I knew he was neither a politician nor an artist. I came to find this name in a sports newspaper. And it was thus that I discovered who Mr. Javier De La Torre was.

 

Even back then he was already an almost historic figure for Guadalajara and all of its Mexican fans. I hope that these words serve as a tribute of sorts for one of the architects of the glory that this team has obtained in Mexican futbol. Don Javier de la Torre was an integral part of the group who led to Guadalajara being called “el Campeonisimo” (the Super Champions) due to reaching and staying at the absolute pinnacle of Mexican futbol for seven years in a row.
